No matter where you’re from or where you go, you can almost always rely on one thing: There will be pizza, and it will be delivered. If it’s too cold to venture outdoors, or if there’s a big game on and you can’t drag yourself away, or if you simply need something to sponge up what you’ve just been drinking, there are lots of pizzerias in Portland—local, indie pizzerias—ready to answer your telephone call and deliver you a wide variety of fresh specialty pies. Here are but five of them:

Sizzle Pie

Sizzle Pie's Gene Parmesan
Sizzle Pie's Gene Parmesan

The motto of Michael McKennedy and Matthew Jacobson’s metal-leaning rock ‘n’ roll pizzeria is “Death to False Pizza.” They may not have a wood-fired oven, but their crust is thin, crunchy and true. Sizzle Pie is also known for its inventive, clever and punsy names, which can help tilt you toward a pie you might not normally consider—like the always surprising Gene Parmesan (beef steak and broccoli with a parmesan-peppercorn sauce).

Vegan cheese and gluten-free crust options: Yes. In fact, there are 10 vegan specialty pies alone.

Extras: None really. Excepting salad and breadsticks, Sizzle Pie sticks to one thing.

Delivers till: 2:45 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 3:45 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Lonesome's Pizza

Lonesome's Pizza's Tesla the Inventor vs. Dokken the Band

You know Lonesome’s Pizza for its late-night delivery, for its pizza boxes stuffed with little treasures authored by local and regional indie artists, and, perhaps most of all, for its wildly named pies that reflect a very 1980s action movie form of masculinity that’s either tongue-in-cheek, deadly serious, or both. (Pies are dedicated to Lorenzo Lamas, David Hasselhoff, Dolph Lundgren, and the incomparable Patrick Swayze.) The pizzas are seriously playful too. To get a grip on Lonesome’s at its best, try the inspired Tesla the Inventor vs. Dokken the Band: It’s a crispy thin-crust pie made with a spicy Ethiopian-inspired tomato sauce, a sprinkling of tangy chèvre, and thick braids of braised leg of lamb.

Vegan cheese and gluten-free crust options: Yes.

Extras: Wings, ice cream and boxes decorated with visual and aural gifts from artists the owners wish to champion.

Delivers till: 3 a.m., Sunday through Wednesday, and 4 a.m., Thursday through Saturday.

Pizzicato Pizza

Pizzicato Pizza's Rudy’s Pizza

No matter where you live, there’s a pretty good chance you can get a Pizzicato pie delivered to your door—10 Pizzicato locations span the city. And while many of us like to lean hard on the red sauce, Pizzicato makes some mean white pizzas too—try the Rudy’s Pizza, a thin cruster brushed with garlic and olive oil and topped with lamb sausage and scallions as well as caramelized onions and mascarpone, which give the pie its creamy and buttery properties.

Vegan cheese and gluten-free crust options: Crusts, yes, but you’re gonna have to skip the cheese on a veggie pie to go full vegan.

Extras: Salads, panini and starters like warm artichoke and spinach dip.

Delivers till: Generally 9 p.m., unless otherwise noted.

Old Town Pizza

Old Town Pizza's Dragon Lady
Old Town Pizza's Dragon Lady

If you like your crust thick, but not quite deep-dish, then Old Town’s the place for you. And while the kitchen cooks up a few specialty pies (as well as build-your-owns), the most special—and surprising—might be the Dragon Lady—topped with mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes and cooked with a trio of zingy ingredients: artichoke hearts, capers and thick wedges of crunchy onions that stay raw enough to retain spice and a snap when you bite into them.

Vegan cheese and gluten-free crust options: Crusts, yes, and you can always build your own sans cheese.

Extras: Your order is delivered by bike. And your cyclist will also deliver beer—that’s beer brewed in-house—if you ask for it.

Delivers till: 11 p.m. (Northwest) and 10 p.m. (Brewery).

Pizza Nostra

Pizza Nostra's Bloody Mary
Pizza Nostra's Bloody Mary

Pizza Nostra’s pretty new, and while the crust here could use some work, the kitchen does make some interesting specialty pies—like a spicy Bloody Mary topped with sliced tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, melted islands of mozzarella, and ribbons of freshly chopped basil. Because the sauce is spiced with crushed red chilies, the pie is lightly—and appropriately—sauced. But if you like your pies with extra sauce, don’t worry—the kitchen packs a pair of ramekins filled with the stuff into each box.

Vegan cheese and gluten-free crust options: Yes.

Extras: Buffalo wings, salads, breadsticks.

Delivers till: Shop closes at 10 p.m., so the earlier you order, the better. That said, last call for delivery is 9:30 p.m.
