Six Great Things to Do This Weekend…

LEARN

When: Saturday, July 3, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Cost: FREE

Come experience the beauty and majesty of the Tryon Creek State Natural Area on this free guided hike on the 3rd before nearly burning the whole thing down on the 4th with those illegal fireworks you got from the Indian reservation. What a country!

ENGAGE

30 Hour Day
Where: The Web
When: Friday, July 2, 4 p.m.-Saturday, July 3, 10 p.m.
Cost: FREE
Tip: Check out the telethon live and in person from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturday at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Want to support a good cause but don’t want the butt cheek impressions in your couch to lose their depth and shape? Well, friend, this is your lucky weekend. The 30 Hour Day is a livestreaming telethon to raise money for Portland charities like the Oregon Food Bank and the Oregon chapter of the Red Cross. Just watch, donate, and then get right back to your Internet porn.

RELAX

Portland Beavers vs. Las Vegas 51s + Post Game Fireworks Display
Where: PGE Park, 1844 SW Morrison
When: Sunday, July 4, 7:05 p.m.
Cost: $8-$40
Tip: Most Beavs games don’t sell out, but this one might, so get your tickets in advance.

There’s no better way to celebrate what makes American great this 4th of July than by taking in a good old fashioned baseball game followed by a post-game fireworks show. It’s also Kids Sunday at PGE Park, so bring your little ankle biters to the park early for pre-game catch on the field, player autographs, face painting and more.

CONSUME

Build a Burger Fundraiser at King Portland Farmers Market
Where: King Market, NE 7th and Wygant
When: Sunday, July 4, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Cost: $5
Tip: Vegetarian? Ask for a grilled Tofurky sausage instead.

Mmmmm… charity. Help support Foodshare Fund Northeast (FFNE) this Sunday at King Market by… eating? That’s right. Get a burger fresh off the grill, chips and a cookie for just $5. 100% of the proceeds go to FFNE to provide healthy food for people receiving SNAP benefits. If only all charity work was this delicious.

PLAY

Multnomah Outdoor Cinema: Kung Fu Panda
Where: Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy
When: Friday, July 2, 8 p.m. (movie begins at dusk)
Cost: FREE
Tip: Get there by at least 8 p.m. to snag the best seats.

Anyone who has kids knows that the only way to shut the little bastards up and make them sit still for more than 5 minutes is to pop in a Disney movie and pray to God that the dancing panda on the screen holds their attention. This Friday, the Multnomah Arts Center will offer P-Town parents yet another brief respite with a free showing of Kung Fu Panda on their covered outdoor basketball courts. Enjoy it while it lasts…

EXPLORE

First Friday in Montavilla
Where: Montavilla neighborhood
When: Friday, July 2, 5 p.m.
Cost: FREE
Tip: Plan your visit in advance with this list so you don’t miss anything good.

It’s First Friday time on the eastside of town, and this month, the reemerging Montavilla neighborhood is doing it up right with all manner of food, drink, music and, oh yeah, art concentrated along a short stretch of SE Stark. Rare bourbon flights at the Country Cat, live music at the Bipartisan Cafe and a display of artwork on both skin and canvas alike at Raw Ink Tattoo are just a few of the options.
