Design Advice: Department of Homeland Security Garage/Office Space Proposed in South Portland
The unoccupied building on the 4300 block of Southwest Macadam may be occupied by the Department of Homeland Security. To make room for the Feds, the owners of the building seek to build a new three-story 74,000 square-foot parking garage, topped by a floor of extra office space, bringing it flush to and connecting it with the preexisting four-story 39,000 square-foot office complex formerly used by Bank of America as a check-cashing facility. Conditional Use Review: Wapato Correctional Facility in St. Johns

Because of budgetary constraints, coupled with a drop in crime, the Wapato Correctional Facility (near North Ledbetter and North Pacific Greenway) in St. Johns was never occupied and has remained empty since securing approval by the city in 2001. In light of that, Multnomah County is seeking the flexibility to lease the facility's 525 beds to surrounding counties or to convert them to prison beds to be leased to the state. Comments on this project need to be received by the Bureau of Development Services (BDS) no later than August 11 for them to be reflected in its August 20 report.
A public hearing is scheduled for September 1. (LU 10-146928 CU)
OHSU Apartments Proposed in Homestead

On the morning of July 28, at 9 a.m., residents will have a final chance to present written and oral evidence before a hearings officer concerning a proposed land split off of Southwest Curry and Southwest 11th Avenue. The project proposal includes dividing a nearly quarter-acre lot into seven new lots ranging in size from 1,200 square feet to 2,000 square feet. Because the proposal is on a site deemed a potential landslide hazard area, the applicant, OHSU Apartments LLC, submitted a required geotechnical evaluation for the proposal, with the understanding that further evaluations may be required before construction can begin on the new lots. Environmental Review: Oregon Zoo Veterinary Center in Arlington Heights

BDS re-reviewed an environmental review for the Metro Oregon Zoo's application to build a 15,500 square-foot veterinary medical center and quarantine facility at the zoo's northern tip. The project had been approved in September, 2009, but, because of budgetary reasons, the zoo has since made plans to demolish their current quarantine building before the medical center's construction can begin. Environmental re-review was needed since this change will affect the land around the site, including the removal of 71 trees. (Approved, LU 10-113106 EN)
