If your backyard doesn’t grow anything but weeds and the crisper in your fridge is used to store old packets of Taco Bell hot sauce, it might be time to get your green thumb on—Northwest-style. This two-hour class is for gardening newbies, old pros who need a refresher or anyone who wants to learn the secrets to cultivating a great garden in Portland’s unique (i.e. rain-drenched) climate.
ENGAGE
Rockstar Stella Leukemia Benefit

When: Saturday, June 5, 12 p.m. (family), 6 p.m. (21 and over)

Good times and a great cause will come together in perfect harmony this Saturday at a benefit for 9-year-old Stella Monteverde-Cakebread, who suffers from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The family-friendly daytime portion of the event will feature music by Kode Bluuz, interactive theatre with Katie O’Grady and all manner of activities, raffles and food. Then, come 6 p.m., it’s time to open up the bar and let the adults get down to musical performances by Dr. Theopolis, Lindsey Stormo, Stephanie Schneiderman, Stolen Sweets and Oracle (“Yeaaaahhh! Play Wonderwall!” screams the drunk guy in the front row.) Food, dance exhibitions and a silent auction will also be on hand. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.
RELAX
Road House, the Play!

Ah, Patrick Swayze, the late great actor who brought us cinematic gems like Dirty Dancing and Point Break, not to mention the best Saturday Night Live sketch EVER when he and Chris Farley played auditioning Chippendales dancers (seriously, you must Google it). Now Swayze’s memory lives on with Road House, the Play! which combines the infamous movie’s original script with new songs to create perhaps the best/worst/most hilarious thing that’s ever happened to Portland theatre.
CONSUME
Pacific Northwest Barbecue Championship
Where: Tom McCall Waterfront Park (intersection of NW Glisan St. and Naito Pkwy)
When: Friday, June 4, 1 p.m.; Saturday, June 5, 11 a.m.; Sunday, June 5 11 a.m.
Cost: $5
Tip: Show up before 4 p.m. on Friday and get in FREE!
When you barbecue it’s a fire hazard; when these guys do it, it’s pure hog heaven. Unleash your inner carnivore this weekend on pork, brisket, chicken, ribs and just about anything else you can toss on the grill at the Pacific Northwest Barbecue Championship. Every day offers something new, but Saturday looks to be the most interesting with both an Iron Chef competition and late night rib specials.
PLAY
Rose City Rollers Semifinals
Where: The Hangar at Oaks Park, 7805 SE Oaks Park Way
When: Friday, June 4, 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 5, 6 p.m.
Cost: $14 (general admission), $20 (“Rockstar” reserved bleacher seating)
Tip: If purchasing a general admission ticket, get there an hour early when the doors open to claim the best seats.
A high speed cloud of glitter, hairspray and fishnet stockings will take Oaks Park by storm this weekend as the Rose City Rollers hold two semifinal playoff games. If you’ve always dreamed of seeing a girl in rainbow thigh-highs and a tiara elbow another girl in the face while speeding by you on roller skates (and let’s be honest, who hasn’t?) then this event is for you.
