Southeast Uplift Neighborhood Coalition recently received a grant from the East Multnomah County Soil and Water Conservation District to install raingardens and a vegetated parking lot swale to treat stormwater runoff. This is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the impact our building and grounds have on the environment, and to create an attractive pocket park for our neighbors.
Volunteer work parties will be organized starting in the fall to install the features, but in the meantime, Southeast Uplift and OSU Extension service have partnered to create a wonderful volunteer opportunity as part of the project. We are seeking adult volunteers to lead a 4-H service club for students in grades 5-8 that will explore water resources, nature, sustainability and engineering, all while making a difference in the community. An important part of this program will be community service as youth partner with Southeast Uplift to implement sustainable storm water management projects. Youth will gain knowledge and hands-on experience creating projects to treat storm water runoff and convert the SE Uplift grounds into valued community space.
The club will typically meet 6-8 hours total per month. The time and duration of meetings will depend on the schedule and availability of volunteers and youth. The 4-H volunteer will receive free training in positive youth development and sustainable living. This opportunity also provides excellent personal and professional development opportunities in the fields of education, youth development, volunteer management and development for sustainability.
