Solarize Northeast, a volunteer-driven, community-based volume purchasing project for solar electric panels organized by Portland's Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods (NECN), expects to create over 20 new green jobs in the Portland area in the coming months. The project is designed to simplify the process of going solar as well as bring significant cost reductions through volume purchasing. Enrollment for the group purchase program is now open at http://solarize.necoalition.org and closes April 15.
Through a competitive bidding process, NECN selected SolarCity to implement the group purchase program and install the solar electric systems. SolarCity has been in business in Oregon since 2008 with offices based in NE Portland.
SolarCity is hiring electricians, limited renewable technicians, and warehouse staff for its Northeast Portland office. NECN and SolarCity will hold a Renewable Energy Job Fair, Saturday, February 27th, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., at Curious Comedy Theater, 5225 NE Martin Luther King Blvd
Representatives from renewable energy training programs will also be at the fair to provide information about how to train for jobs in these fields. The job fair will also feature community-based pre-apprenticeship programs that provide training in the trades, a first step toward a career in these jobs.
