Portland Sports Preview: February 27-March 4

The best of this week’s upcoming sports events

Sunday, February 28
Portland State Vikings vs. Weber State Wildcats

It’s PSU’s final home game of the season, and it's gonna be a doozy. Not only are the Viks hosting powerhouse Weber State—a team that has won 9 out of their last 10 games and sits atop the Big Sky Conference—but the way things are stacking up, they could also be playing for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament. Lose and the season is effectively over. Win and it’s off to the conference tourney next month where they’ll have the pleasure of playing…Weber State again. Ugh. It won’t be easy but it could be fun.

Wednesday, March 3
Portland Trail Blazers vs. Indiana Pacers

When starting center Greg Oden went down with a season-ending knee injury, then backup center Joel Przybilla had the same thing happen a few weeks later, we chalked it up to bad luck. But when the Blazers traded for a yet another center, Marcus Camby, earlier this month and he crumpled to the ground with a sprained ankle after just three games with the team, only one conclusion could logically be reached: Government conspiracy. That’s right, we’re on to you, Obama!
Where: Rose Garden
When: 7 p.m.
Tickets: 797-9600, trailblazers.com

Tuesday, March 2
Portland Pilots vs. Lewis & Clark Pioneers

What a season it’s been for the underdog Pilots, who have knocked off big-time opponent after big-time opponent en route to an 18-9 record, good for third place in the West Coast Conference, a trip to the conference tournament in Las Vegas next week and maybe, just maybe, a long awaited NCAA Tournament bid. It would only be fitting for fans to pack the house and show their appreciation for a great season in the Pilots’ final home game against Lewis & Clark.
Where: Chiles Center
When: 7 p.m.
