Neighborhood Bake Sale a Delicious Success for Haiti Relief Effort

Neighborhood children from Isobel's Clubhouse decided to hold a bake sale to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief effort. They made signs, told their friends, chose Mercy Corps as the beneficiary and helped their parents make delicious baked goods. But they couldn't control the weather which was cold, rainy and downright unpleasant. The chilly temperatures didn't stop the neighborhood from coming out to support the event, however. The bake sale raised $521.63 on the day of the event. Donations since then have brought them close to $600. Click here for pictures of cute kids, cookies and cupcakes.

Part of what makes this event special is, of course, how neighbors came together for a good cause. Little Green Grocer donated space, supplies, and a warm place to get away from the cold. Lovejoy Bakers made special breads, Whole Foods donated hot chocolate, and CHAP helped with signage. Families baked, and neighbors bought goodies. It was a a village effort.

What might not be as obvious is that the children developed leadership skills, life skills, and learned about philanthropy. The meeting where they decided on a bake sale was, you guessed it, called by children and led by children. They learned about planning for an event, math skills, and picking reputable charities. And this Saturday they will go to Mercy Corps to deliver their donation, meet with staff and learn more about how their funds will be used.  Thanks everyone for making this a success.
