Two Portland-based artists are bringing their latest film work to our town in the next ten days, starting off with the Portland premiere of Jacob Pander's Selfless, which begins a week-long run at Cinema 21 in the Northwest District. Jacob, son of fine artist Henk Pander and brother of Arnold Pander, with whom he has collaborated on multiple comic book projects, has been touring the festival circuit with Selfless, including winning the Best Feature Award at the BendFilm Festival in 2008, but this is its first appearance in Pander's hometown.
From the official description of the film: Selfless is a psychological thriller about a self-absorbed architect whose world collapses when his identity is stolen. Dylan Gray, a rising young star in the trendy ‘green’ architecture movement, is flying high from winning a prized high-rise commission when he unwittingly plants the seeds of his own destruction during a chance encounter with a deadly stranger. While waiting to board his plane home to Portland, Dylan sketches an unflattering caricature of fellow passenger Wesley Stone to impress an attractive flight attendant. As Dylan soon learns, the stranger he brazenly ridiculed is a master at stealing identities, and he’s just made Dylan Gray his next target!
Selfless will screen with Radius, the Pander Brothers’ first collaborative short, shot in 1988 at the end of the Cold War. The 5-minute film uses architectural abstraction to frame Portland’s Burnside Bridge as it opens and gives way to a lethal military vessel that passes through its gates. The location was chosen for its infamous designation as Portland’s “ground zero”, which was believed to be the target site of a potential Soviet nuclear missile strike.

With their father missing and no place else to go, Eliza and Eva are dependent on Tommy for their survival. As the days turn into weeks, it becomes increasingly clear that the girl's father may not return any time soon, leaving Tommy to face some tough decisions. His friends and family all want him to step up to the plate and be a real man, but he's not ready to make the sacrifices needed to become a father to Eliza and Eva.
