We've heard it enough: these are tough times. What we don't hear enough is how creativity and gumption thrive—and are rewarded—during those tough times. Should it be any surprise, then, that here in this hothouse of ideas and cheap rents, more and more businesses are actually opening rather than closing? The breathless blog posts about new restaurants, shops, galleries, and salons are coming so fast and furious, it's like Christmas everyday. But how to keep up? Why, with this, your handy-dandy cheat sheet to Portland's newest additions from September and October! Every month I'll handle the research and keep up with the gossip; all you have to do is decide where to start exploring.

NORTHWEST
Jinx Bar
The name is no joke: After three restaurant-bars opened and closed in as many years, you could say the space next to Vault Martini is a bit jinxed. So the Vault folks took things into their own hands, opening this sassy cocktail lounge. With a menu featuring slightly more gourmet versions of ‘70s living room staples (think tater tots and salisbury steak) and drinks like the Love Boat, Hawaii 5-0, and Three's Company, irreverent nostalgia may be the winning formula.

Magnum Opus
After 35 years, this iconic Portland salon deserved a makeover of its own, don't you say? So they bought and remodeled their own building entirely dedicated to hair services and moved into the 7,000 square foot space (with parking lot!) last month. That's room for a whole lot of cutting, coloring, and styling. Don't miss their Open House on December 6, with local food and wine.

Like other chef-inspired sandwich joints Bunk and Meat Cheese Bread, Melt is all about piling inspired combinations of gourmet, local ingredients between two slices of bread—and these ones are hot, hot, hot (as you might have guessed from the name). There's a crab burger with havarti, pot roast topped with crunchy onions, and a veggie with roasted eggplant, most under $9.

Stop here instead of Target to support what they call "mindful commerce," and look for a juice bar, yoga classes, and other community events to come soon.

So a poet and a musician open a vintage shop over Labor Day weekend and name it after their grandparents. Cute, huh? Even better than the story behind the store is the quality of the clothing, which is cleaned and repaired before hitting the floor. The cozy French cottage decor and incredibly awesome prices don't hurt, either.

The exposed brick, the delicate jewelry for sale, the vintage decor—this isn't the rough and gritty tattoo parlor you're used to (as you may have read here before). In fact, with most of the artists women, there's a decidedly softer vibe in the space where you can take the plunge and get inked or just stop in for tea and browse the handmade cards.

Wow! What a great list! I can't wait to check these places out, especially the vintage shop and Land.
Thanks! Liz did a great job, for sure.
I'm looking forward to trying MIHO, but can attest the greatness of Back to Eden (delectable) and The National Beauty (my stylist Theo works there).
Just wait and see what's being added as we speak! The November list is already pretty impressive...
So many new, exciting places!
I don't even know where to start...
Congrats + best wishes to all these new businesses!
Thanks for making our community so vibrant!
Whew! Nice! Hey did you check out LIMO Restaurant -- also in the old Cameo Cafe space next to Paseo. It's my total favorite restaurant -- for Happy Hour AND worth springing for dinner. YUM!!!!!
YUM YUM Melt in NW sounds FABULOUS! I'm headed over immediately! I heard they have happy hour too...

We would love to be added to this great list of new shops! Mystique opened in September in Pioneer Place. We represent more than 60 artists, mostly local, and feature a large selection of handcrafted masquerade masks.
Oh, LIMO! How could I miss a new Peruvian spot with happy hour? If you love it, it's got to be good Ms. Happy Hour expert!
And yes, Bell, Melt has happy hour with great small bites as well: 4-6 p.m. & 9 p.m.-close Monday thru Saturday. Not bad!
Mystique, thanks for letting us know about you! The beauty of the internet is that I *can* add to the article and make it as comprehensive as possible.
Now, everyone, get out there this weekend and let us know what you loved!
