TRAFFIC ADVISORY » I-405 Weekend Closure

Just received a reminder about the I-405 closure this weekend. Paving will close northbound lanes between the Fremont and Marquam bridges. Here are the details from ODOT:

Friday night, Aug. 21, starting at 10 p.m. to Monday, Aug. 24, at 5 a.m. all northbound lanes on Interstate 405 will be closed between the Fremont and Marquam bridges. All ramps connecting to northbound I-405 also will be closed during these work hours. Lanes and most ramps on southbound I-405 will remain open during the northbound closure. The Fremont Bridge connection from U.S. 30/Yeon Ave. and the Marquam Bridge will remain open during this work.

The S.W. Montgomery on-ramp to I-405 southbound will be closed. This closure is required to keep the increased traffic on I-405 southbound flowing smoothly. No other ramp closures to I-405 southbound are planned for this weekend.

Detours
During the full directional closures of I-405 northbound, motorists will be able to use Interstate 5 northbound as an alternate route to reach their destination. Detour maps are available on the Oregon Department of Transportation's project web site listed below.

Remaining Directional Closures
As many as 125,000 vehicles use I-405 on an average day. Consequently, closing lanes during weekday hours would cause significant backups on I-405, I-5 and local streets. ODOT is allowing the contractor to use a total of four weekends of full directional (north or south) closures to complete the project. Two weekends will be allowed for each directional (I-405 north or south) closure. During the weekend closures, one direction of I-405 will be completely closed to all traffic from 10 p.m. Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday morning.

This weekend's full directional closure is the second of the four weekend full directional closures. Please be aware that these dates are subject to change due to weather and other factors.

The following is a schedule for the three remaining full directional closures:

  • Friday, Aug. 21, 10 p.m. to Monday, Aug. 24, 5 a.m.: all lanes on northbound I-405 will be closed between the Marquam and Fremont bridges. All ramps connecting to northbound I-405 also will be closed during these work hours. Lanes and ramps on southbound I-405 will remain open during the northbound I-405 closure. The Marquam and Fremont bridges will remain open during this work.
  • Friday, Aug. 28, 10 p.m. to Monday, Aug. 31, 5 a.m.: all lanes on southbound I-405 will be closed between the Marquam and Fremont bridges. All ramps connecting to southbound I-405 also will be closed during these work hours. Lanes and ramps of northbound I-405 will remain open during the southbound I-405 closure.
  • Friday, Sept. 11, 10 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 14, 5 a.m.: all lanes on northbound I-405 will be closed between the Marquam and Fremont bridges. The same information applies as shown above for the northbound I-405 closure. Lanes and ramps on southbound I-405 will remain open during the northbound I-405 closure.

Project Background:
ODOT contractor Kerr Contractors Inc. of Woodburn, Ore., is working on an $11.6 million project to repave I-405 between the Fremont Bridge and the Marquam Bridge. Work includes repaving the ramps to and from I-405, relighting the freeway corridor and tunnels, and upgrading freeway signs. Approximately 30% of the $11.6 million I-405 paving project uses federal stimulus funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
