Zoobomb Bike Library Dedication

On Friday afternoon, zoobomb bikes had been stacked against a tree and were leaning precariously toward the new zoobomb public art installtation at 13th Avenue and West Burnside. It looked as if they were straining to get to their new home. The bikes were placed at the location earlier in the day by a variety of zoobombers. Like the small group gathered for the dedication of the city's newest public art installation, the bikes were posed for the festivities to begin. As I chatted with representatives from Regional Arts and Culture Council and the Community Cycling Center someone shouted, "here they come!"

As the Zoobomers arrived to dedicate their new bike library, NW 13th Avenue quickly became a sea of bikes. Bikes of every description—many bearing costumed riders—charged the atmosphere with giddy festivity. This celebration was a long day coming!

Three years ago, the zoobombers started lobbying the city for a safe and permanent place to store their bikes. In a nutshell: neighbors had complained about the original pyle at 10th and SW Oak, the police impounded the pyle, and bikes were damaged or stolen. Then-Commissioner Sam Adams worked with the zoobombers and the Regional Arts and Culture Coucil (RACC) to find a solution.

RACC commissioned local artists Brian Borrello and Vanessa Renwick to create a functional sculpture that would serve as a permanent location for the bikes and a lasting monument to a unique segment of Portland's bike culture.

The festivities started with Zoobomber spokesperson Shantastic making introductions. RACC Public Art Manager Kristin Calhoun spoke about the grant and RACC's involvement. Zoobomber Handsome Dave thanked all who were involved.

Mayor Sam Adams spoke about his involvement with the zoobombers and how the the library evolved. He cut the ribbon—officially opening the Library— and, within minutes, zoobombers stacked and locked assembled mini-bikes into place.

The bike library, located at 13th and Burnside, is easy to find. Just look for the gold mini-bike at the top of the pyle.
