Recommendations Sought: NW/SW Neighborhood Apartments

We recently received a phone call from a reader in... San Francisco?  That's right. He's moving to Portland in August to attend law school at Lewis & Clark. While researching where to live, he came across Neighborhood Notes. He likes the site and the information provided, so he contacted us to ask for recommendations on apartment buildings.

We could give him a list of buildings, but we thought it would be better to get your recommendations and help him narrow down his choices.

Here are his requirements:

  • Less that $1100 a month for rent
  • Prefers northwest or southwest PDX
  • Within 20 minutes walking distance to Pioneer Square. L&C has a shuttle to campus that stops there
  • He doesn't cook, so access to decent, affordable food is necessary; this includes a grocery store with prepared food
  • Laundry facilities either in the unit or in the building
  • Gym in the building or within walking distance
  • He doesn't have a car, so proximity to public transit is important

Our San Franciso reader will be visiting Portland the weekend of July 11-12 and wants to visit several buildings. He hopes to sign a lease that weekend and move up a month later. So, what do you say: Which apartments do you like and why do you recommend them? What's your experience with NW/SW apartments?

Help this soon-to-be-student find a decent place to live!

I lived on NW 23rd and Johnson.(10 years ago) ...close to everything. Hop on the #15 and it drops you off on SW park and Salmon. IPM managment!

I have just the PERFECT place for rent. Although I live in Tanner Place, my North Park Loft at NW 8th and NW EVERETT fits the bill in every way. Easy Pearl living with 6th floor views on the shady N. Park Blocks and a deal at $998 per month. Partially furnished w/ Scan Design items. Photos available.

I would say, based on his requirements, that an apt. in either Nob Hill/Alphabet District/ NW 23st & 21st or an apt. in the Pearl District would be his best bet. I live in downtown Southwest, and if he can pay that much, than he should be able to find a place in the heart of the action (and the food!) quite easily.

    Check out http://www.rhp-apts.com/buildingpage.php?city=PDX&propertyId=30
One of our neighbors just moved out, although it's not yet posted on RH's availability. It's on the 3rd floor of the Belle Court on NW Trinity Place - best block in town. We pay 1200 for the top - it's one floor down - should be around 1100/1150. Beautiful building, delightful people, food/coffee/bars, etc. everywhere, supermarket one block away, MAX train stop two blocks away, lively and hip local scene... But whatever you decide, keep in mind: this is Portland, not the Bay. You can show up on a bus and find what you need in two days on foot (provided you have dinero;)
