I-405 Repaving Project Open House and Update

In March, we mentioned the I-405 repaving project, which will pave I-405 from the Marquam Bridge to the Fremont Bridge. We just received this update, which outlines the project, expected lane closures/detours and information on the ODOT Open House. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009.

I-405 paving project open house set for June 25; contractor starting work on project Motorists should expect weekend directional closures, nighttime lane closures

ODOT contractor Kerr Contractors Inc. of Woodburn, Ore., has started work on an $11.6 million project to repave Interstate 405 from the Fremont Bridge to the Marquam Bridge. Work includes repaving the ramps to and from I-405, relighting the freeway corridor and tunnels, and upgrading freeway signs.

Open House
ODOT will host a project Open House Thursday, June 25, 2009. The public is invited to learn more about the project, including construction and traffic impacts:
Where: University of Oregon White Stag Building, 70 NW Couch St.
When: 5 p.m.-7 p.m., June 25, 2009

Traffic Impacts
As many as 125,000 vehicles use I-405 on an average day. Consequently, closing lanes during weekday hours would cause significant backups on I-405, I-5 and local streets. ODOT is allowing the contractor to use four weekends of full directional (north or south) closures to complete the project. Two weekends will be allowed for each directional (I-405 north or south) closure. During the weekend closures, one direction of I-405 will be completely closed to all traffic from 10 p.m. Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday morning. The tentative dates for the full directional closures are:

Friday, July 24, 10 p.m. to Monday, July 27, 5 a.m. I-405 NORTH will be closed
Friday, July 31, 10 p.m. to Monday, August 3, 5 a.m. I-405 NORTH will be closed
Friday, August 14, 10 p.m. to Monday, August 17, 5 a.m. I-405 SOUTH will be closed
Friday, August 21, 10 p.m. to Monday, August 24, 5 a.m. I-405 SOUTH will be closed

One direction of I-405 will be open at all times during the weekend closures. In addition to the weekend closures, the contractor will use weeknight lane and ramp closures to complete work during the duration of the project.

Three tunnels - the Taylor St. and Everett St. on-ramps to I-405 south and the U.S. 26 east ramp to I-405 north - also will be closed during nighttime hours so work crews can update lighting. Work will take place in one tunnel at a time only, with about a week's worth of nighttime closures required to complete each tunnel.

Detours
During the full directional closures of I-405, motorists will be able to used I-5 as an alternate route. For example, during weekends when I-405 north is closed, motorists can use I-5 north to get to their destination. Detour maps will be available on ODOT's project web site listed below as the weekend full closures approach.

Federal Stimulus Funds
Approximately 30% of the $11.6 million I-405 paving project uses federal stimulus funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
