The Weekender: Things to Do (May 16-17)

This weekend, there's a little something for everyone in Portland neighborhoods. We'd like to call out some really cool events for your consideration: Art Hop, 27th Annual Irvington Home Tour and the Modified Style Fashion Show. Each event showcases a particular neighborhood and/or supports charitable organizations in Portland neighborhoods. Is there any better way to end the week?

Alberta Arts District Tenth Annual Art Hop Event King, Concordia
by Jennifer Coughlin

Art on Alberta is getting ready for its tenth annual Art Hop festival happening on Saturday, May 16th. The street will be closed to motor vehicles to allow folks to meander through the 'hood, taking in the exhibit spread out in five galleries and taking in the music, street performers, demonstrations and activities set up for kids. There will also be a parade in which the public is allowed to participate. The organization's flyers for the parade suggest: "Ride your bike! Roller your skates! Bring a band! Sing a song! Wear a costume! Scream real loud!" It sounds like it should be a good time for all ages.

This year's featured artist is Thelma Johnson Streat, a painter and dancer in the 1930s, whose work was internationally recognized in her day. One of her paintings was the first piece by an African American artist to be purchased for the collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Streat was an Oregonian and attended the art school then affiliated with the Portland Art Museum. Streat's family still resides in the Portland area and has been working to obtain her works through auctions over the years. This event marks the first time all of Streat's work will be shown together in one place, and Art on Alberta has been working hard to showcase her work in our neighborhood, believing that she is a great symbol of the community, and hopes her personal story will inspire others, too. Art Hop will be showing 50 of her pieces, newly restored and framed.

27th Annual Irvington Home Tour Irvington

2009 Irvington Home Tour taking place on Sunday May 17th from 11am to 5pm. Eight fine homes will be presented with the historic 1916 Coleman-Scott House as the showcase. Included in the $20 price of admission is a lecture in the afternoon at the Central Lutheran Church titled, "Respecting Period Interiors: How to Remodel, not Remuddle".

The money collected goes to social service programs, schools, and neighborhood projects. Please, no children under 7 except for infants in front packs.

Modified Style Fashion Show Eliot

Fashion meets sustainability in this Do-It-Yourself fashion show! Twenty-three local designers with no sewing experience are using scraps gathered around town to create fashion wonders. Designers, who reportedly have no sewing experience, had 2 1/2 months to complete their creation. The night will include a silent auction when you can bid on the amazing garments!

Modified Style is a semi-annual fashion show/fundraiser that takes place in Portland and Seattle each year. This event is May 17 at 7 pm at the Secret Society Ballroom, 116 NE Russell, Portland. Tickets are $10-15, and all benefits go to Sisters Of The Road, The Farm Sanctuary and Junior Achievement. Tickets are available now from Brown Paper Tickets.
