Saying Goodbye: Pearl District Loses Another Local Business

The rough-cut butcher paper emblazoned with "Location Closing" is always startling to me. Businesses are so particular about every aspect of their presentation—until they close.

Last night, I couldn't help but notice the telltale signs in the windows of Urbane Zen. Sadly, the bath, body and skin care boutique located at 205 NW 10th Avenue is closing its doors. The company has three locations—in the Pearl, Lake Oswego and Tigard—we haven't been able to confirm which, if any, will remain open. More details to come later today.

As always, we wish the owners and employees the very best on future endeavors.

Update (5/19/09): Just learned that inventory is going fast and the Pearl location may not even be open through the weekend. The other two Urbane Zen locations will remain open. Visit them for your favorite Urbane Zen products or shop online.

I talked with them about 3 months ago and they were leaning this way. Owners I think are based in Cali. Bummer to see another one go

Not to be mean, but I'm not surprised. I lived in the Pearl for two years and stopped in a few times - eager to spend money for gifts - but never felt compelled to even consider a purchase.

@rjl I'm sure a lot of businesses are weighing their options. This economy is brutal. I agree: sad to see them go.

@cosmonaut I don't think it's mean, especially if there was some tangible reason that you never felt compelled to make a purchase. I'm sure that local businesses would love to know what they can do to encourage sales. Any thoughts?

Glad to see it go. How many pairs of novelty pajamas does an adult really need people?
