City Snaps: Aerial Photos of Portland

Last fall, I had a rare opportunity to do a little aerial photography of Portland and just couldn't pass it up. As they say, the view is better from the top—different, anyways! I really enjoyed seeing Stumptown from this perspective and hope that you do too.

I do too! It looks especially pretty from the clouds though. :-)

The last one - a shot from the south is rarely seen. Such a different view of the city. Thanks!

Very cool! On the fourth image, what are those towers peaking out of the clouds? Looks like smoke stacks, but they are lined up so strangely.

Ugly images and they were shot at the wrong time of day. Plus your too high up. You need to shoot lower. Better luck next time...

Julian, I'm not sure what those towers are. If I can find out I'll let you know,

    Ken,

If you want to go up at a better time of day to keep the critics happy, I'd be happy to oblige you sometime. I'm afraid I can't violate the regulations on minimum safe altitude though. For that you'd need a helicopter.

Trace, thanks but there are other factors such as time of year, weather, etc. Light in the fall and winter, when we went up, is colder than in the summer. So is the angle of the sun. We were also batting fog and clouds. We went up with the specific purpose to fill your projects needs, and we did that, the rest was fun. For the first time trying aerial photography I was pretty happy with the results. It took me a while shooting underwater to get to a really high level of art and craft. The same is true for most specialties. I've been thinking about other shots I'd like to have for for the library and the site. Sometime this summer we can go up again, when I have a full list of shots ready. And unless you get your helicopter license soon, we'll have to stay at that minimum level that we are required to stay.
