That's right, boba fans. Fat Straw is expanding its bubble tea empire. The current location at 4258 SE Hawthorne will have a westside companion at 806 NW 23rd. You may recognize the address as the former basement level digs of Same Underneath.
Fat Straw has the reputation of offering Portland's best bubble tea. Not just your standard varieties, but flavors such as strawberry milk tea, taro milk tea and pomegranate black tea. In addition to bubble tea, Fat Straw offers fresh fruit smoothies, Stumptown Coffee, fresh homemade bagels and more. The Hawthorne location offers free wifi, a lounging area and a meeting room. Not sure what the northwest location will offer, but I'm looking forward to checking it out.
Yelper Amanda E. says, "I don't know what I would do if anything ever happened to Fat Straw. This place is the king of boba. The milk tea is vegan! The pearls are always perfectly cooked and the milk tea is creamy and smooth. If you're not feeling the boba, you can always get a flavored tea, a smoothie, a coffee (Stumptown), a tea latte...there's something for everyone. The boba-ristos are so nice - they even know my order. If you want to hang out for a while, they have computers, free wi-fi, and plenty of tables, couches, and chairs. If you get hungry, have a bagel! Seriously, though - if you consider yourself a boba fan, get thee to Fat Straw immediately."
Sounds like a great addition to the neighborhood. What do you think?

This is not a great addition to the neighborhood. Fat Straw has the worst service! Both times I went, the people working seemed to try to make me feel guilty for wanting to order a bubble tea. Seriously, this is not a good business and their drinks are too sweet! It is only a matter of time before that space is empty again.
How can I apply at this location?
best bubble tea in portland? i don't think so. my vote for best bubble tea in pdx goes to blue sky or bubble bubble. fat straw is too sweet. however, i am glad they're opening a store in nw - even though it IS too sweet, they offer better boba than the other tea place on nw 23rd.
OMG I 'bout died when I first saw the banner in the window of their new space. I'm a student at Linfield, and also live around the corner and a few doors down. My classmates and I drive over to the Hawthorn location at least 3 times a week for study dates. Their boba is always perfectly chewy; it's the best I've found so far. Now that they are in the neighborhood we don't have to trek all the way to hippie-ville! Impressive selection to choose from. Glad to see they're expanding!
