Start Your Engines at Beaterville Cafe in Overlook

If you haven't been to Beaterville Cafe in Overlook, you're missing out on a real slice of life. We were there at 8:30 this morning and it was teeming with diners starting their day with good food and conversation. This colorful cafe at 2201 N. Killingsworth opens for breakfast at 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends—early enough for everyone to get a jump on their day with a satisfying breakfast.

After chuckling at the colorful collection of beater cars used as planters outside of the cafe, we also got a mid-morning belly laugh from the beater car influenced menu. In a feat of what must be termed as good diagnostics, our server "checked our fluids" and immediately  served up mugs of hot coffee before we even asked. The cheekiness and good humor continued—firing on all cylinders, so to speak—as we ordered our breakfast. We got a wave when we ordered huevos rancheros and a physical toast when we ordered a side of bread. I'm sure there were others, but we weren't fully, um, fuel-injected at the time.

As I mentioned, we tried the huevos rancheros ($6.50), but we also ordered buttermilk pancakes (two cakes, $3.75) and a Volvo—an omelette made with mushrooms, green onion and swiss cheese (served with your choice of croissant, biscuit or toast, $7.25). And, we accessorized our order with a pork sausage patty ($2.75). In a word: delicious!

After a 5-point inspection—atmosphere, food quality, price, service and value—we proclaim Beaterville Cafe as a great place for Portlanders to start their engines. Check it out!

There was an AMC Pacer parked behind the place. I hadn't seen one in years and didn't think any would be on the road.

We took the kids and everyone was super accommodating. Our food and service was great.
