If you aren't a hardcore athlete, and don't plan to be, then yoga lessons may be the genie in a bottle that makes your New Year's wishes come true in 2009.

Especially if you have prior joint and bone injuries, doing plyometrics, weightlifting and running on a treadmill can put a lot of strain on your vulnerable body parts. The non-abrasive, body flexing, joint strengthening art of yoga is just what the doctor orders. The dual benefit of yoga over many other forms of exercises is that it is a powerful mental discipline as well. Yoga means union, which through my interpretation is the union of the mind and body. Practicing meditation has many great health benefits beyond the physical, as many doctors claim. Yoga and meditation sort of go hand in hand. You can't lose much just for trying it out. So get out there and see what all the hypes about.
