Tool Time for North Portland

Tools.  We all need them, some of us love them and, often, we don't have the right one for the job at hand.  If you live in North Portland there is a great place to borrow the tool you need—the North Portland Tool Library.

Tucked in the basement of the historic Kenton Firehouse, NPTL serves North Portland's need for everything from a wrench to an air compressor or even a nail gun.  The depth and quality of the inventory is amazing! The quarters may be cramped, but the library is well stocked with over 500 tools.  In most cases, they have a deep inventory, so there's a good chance that the tool you need is available. The library operates on a first come, first served basis—it does not place tools on hold.  Feel free to call ahead and check the availability of the tool you need.

History

The North Portland Tool Library was founded in 2004.  Most of the founders remain active in the Library by serving on its board of directors.  The objective of the Tool Library is to help build community and increase livability by providing a free resource to all residents of North Portland.  The library's budget is a combination of grant funding and private donation.  All donations are welcome, including tools that are in good, safe, working condition.

Get Involved

Ariola McSwain, the tool coordinator, and Bob New, the volunteer coordinator, manage day-to-day operation of the library.  But, volunteers play an essential role as well and there are many ways that you can contribute your time:

  • Help man the library
  • Work on a special project
  • Maintain tools

If you want to get involved, contact Bob and let him know what you'd like to do.

Learn New Skills

The NPTL also hosts workshops that cover basic tool use and safety, as well as more advanced topics.  The workshops are free. They are planned and conducted by skilled individuals from the North Portland community or partner organizations.  If you have suggestions for topics-the library is listening!
