It seems that there are too many examples of bad dog/owner behavior in our parks and neighborhoods. What's going on with owners who act oblivious to their dog stealing another dog's toy, dogs biting other dogs while their owners talk on their cell phones, people attempting to steal dogs, and generally weird and unacceptable behavior??? You never know how dogs will react to each other and owners must always be vigilant.
We want our dog loving community to be on their best behavior at all times. We are proud of Portland's Dog Community. None of us wants a bad reputation because of another owner's lack of responsibility or accountability. Recently a dog was bitten at a Pearl park and the owner of the biter didn't even say they were sorry! Blood was drawn and the dog was traumatized by the event. Not good at all!
We live side by side with the whole community and need to pull our weight. None of us is perfect, but effort and sensitivity counts. What do you think?

I think dog owners need licenses.
Hmmm, do you think parents also ought to have licenses too?
If your kids bite and crap on the lawn. Then, yes.
I have news for you Chris, if you spend a few minutes at Jamison Square on a sunny day you'll see that some of those kids DO pee in the trees while their parents are happily chatting away to each other oblivious to what's going on... so... yes the expectations apply equally to parents as well
So, we've established that bad behavior is exhibited by both kids and dogshow do we get both groups to "pull their weight" and make the effort to be sensitive to their own community and others? I think this was the original question posted by pdxdog...
Dog, I have news for you, urine is sterile. It's not even the same game as dookie filled fields. However, you bring a good point. Jamison has no bathrooms and there are hundreds of kids there. Quite an oversight!
However, if there were mandatory parental license requirements, I could see that as a good thing.
Back to dogs and their owners. There are quite a few good owners. It is unfortunate the bad ones make it such an issue.
I agree that it is often those that are negligent that often stay in our memory, leave a bad taste, and don't represent the broader community.
I never thought about there being no bathrooms at Jamison Park, that is a great suggestion.
Yo, there really ought to be a few public bathrooms in downtown/Pearl. I was really surprised a few months ago that I had to walk several blocks, and found no where except a flophouse hotel for my six-year-old son to take a pee.
As for the dog bite issue. Carry a stick.
How about renting portapotties for Jamison Sq.?
I have a dog that would nip (3 actually) and be aggressive players when at a dog park - mostly because they play that way at home and don't know any better. One of my dogs gets sooooo excited by other dogs and small people that she will SCREAM and behave like a crazy animal when all she wants to do is plllaaayyyyy ... I have no idea how to fix this - maybe these other pup parents have similar issues... aside from a shock collar I really don't know how to socialize them better... oh and yes the screamer does pee when she gets excited - so i have covered all bases here.
