by pearlgirl
Stroke is the nation's third leading cause of death. Suffering a stroke can have a devastating impact, not only on the survivor, but also on everyone who cares about them. Alexander Nicoloff, M.D., from Legacy Columbia Vascular and Endovascular Specialists says it’s important to know the symptoms of a stroke to potentially save a loved one or yourself. Millions of brain cells die each minute a stroke is untreated.
Stroke Symptoms
• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden, severe headache with no know cause
Dr. Nicoloff will be leading a class Tuesday, April 29, from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital called “Are You at Risk from Clogged Arteries”. He and registered dietitian Laura Joyce will discuss

Healthy Bottom Line | April is Cancer Control Month
by pearlgirl
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. for men, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the U.S., exceeded only by lung cancer. Bruce Lowe, M.D., a leader in robotic surgery for treating prostate cancer, says early detection can lead to a high success rate for treating the disease.
Risk Factors
• Age is the strongest risk factor. The chance of developing prostate cancer increases rapidly after age 50.
• Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-American men than in men of other races.
• Prostate cancer seems to run in some families, suggesting an inherited or genetic factor.
• Men who eat a lot of red meat or high-fat dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer.
You can find out more information during, New Frontiers in Prostate Cancer Therapy, Wednesday, April 2, from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. Greg McCoy, M.D. and Mark Schray, M.D. will

Portland One of the Best Places to "Live and Launch"
by proprietress
FORTUNE Small Business Magazine published an article in this month's magazine ranking the best places to "Live and Launch" small businesses. No surprise to us, Portland ranked very high on the list at #6! Here's what they had to say about us:
Pros: A thriving urban scene, abundant outdoor recreations
Con: High living costs
Young, educated and creative. That's the kind of workforce on offer in Portland, thanks in part to the presence of companies such as Nike and Intel, which has seven campuses in Oregon, most of them within 20 miles of Portland.
But even independently of these corporations, the city harbors a strong design and high tech industry. Environmentally minded companies will be at home in the area: Portland was ranked the most sustainable city in the U.S. in 2006 by SustainLane, a green-living research and publishing group. While Portland's business tax structure is not the friendliest - Multnomah County imposes a business income tax - the city

Gift a plum for PNCA
by shooter
From The Oregonian :
The Pacific Northwest College of Art continues its ascent to become more than Portland's modest art college in the Pearl District.
Today, in the midst of extraordinary physical expansion and programmatic change, the college will announce its latest coup: a $1 million endowment gift from Ed Cauduro, the reclusive art collector and patron.
The gift will be used to fund four individual renewable scholarships worth $10,000 and will be available to students in the college's bachelor's and master's programs beginning with the 2008-09 academic year. A special committee composed of faculty and staff will pick the students based on financial need and academic achievement. The school numbers about 440 full-time students and roughly 600 continuing education students.

Creative Grid
by shooter
"PNCA is a place modeled by the kinds of artists and thinkers that we bring to be a part of a PNCA education."
Tom Manley, president of PNCA, has an interesting view of how creative organizations fit into a community. As posted on the PNCA blog, "President Manley defines the creative grid as a “map or a way of picturing the overlay of the creative organizations in the city and state and how they’re positioned to support the development of art and culture. The goal is for PNCA to join with other organizations to in effect, increase the density of creative activity."
President Manley was recently interviewed on PNCA's new web radio station. The interview covers his creative grid view, how PNCA has influenced and been influenced by the northwest over the last 100 years, and a look to the future.
“The visual arts and cultural landscape of Portland, Oregon and the Northwest is very much shaped and influenced by what PNCA an
