Analysis puts Sten proposal in doubt

by shooter
Earlier today Nancy posted about how many families live in the River District , that the number is growing, and that they tend to move out before their children are 4–presumably because of the lack of family services in the district. Now the city attorney is raising red flags about Erik Sten's proposal to create a satellite URA, specifically to build a school. Is it legal for the City Council to change the "rules" of the URA game? Somehow I doubt that.

More importantly, if we have a substantial and growing number of families who already live in the River District URA why does the City Council believe it is necessary to change the rules to build a school elsewhere? The need already exists within the URA. Shouldn't the needs of the legal URA be met before the City goes down a questionable path that is likely to be undone after years of legal challenges? Think of how much time and money would be wasted.

The idea of a satellite district opens a huge can of wor

Cool Moon scoops up PDX’s ice cream dreams

by pearlgirl
If you haven't stopped by Cool Moon and met owner Eva Bernhard, you're missing out. She's as delightful as her ice cream. Speaking of ice cream, here's a recent review from Willamette Week...

Freeze, Please

After a whole summer spent lamenting the lack of a real old-fashioned ice cream shop, Portlanders welcomed the Pearl District’s Cool Moon Ice Cream, which finally opened its doors in mid-December. Serving all-natural ice cream and sorbets, you won’t find corn sweeteners or trans fats here. Plus, the rBST-free milk and cream is from local Alpenrose Dairy. If you’ve been wondering where to find fresh ice cream—not gelato or fro-yo—look no further. This is the real stuff—an egg-based, French “custard-style” ice cream that lingers on your tongue, leaving a sweet, creamy coating on your lips, something not often achieved from eating store-bought or mass-produced ice cream.

Flavors ($2.85 per single scoop) vary according to season and whim. Recent

Yoshida vows to appeal $2.5 million verdict

by shooter
From The Oregonian :

"Celebrity businessman Junki Yoshida says he'll appeal a more than $2.5 million jury verdict intended to punish him for his conduct toward the owner of a wine bar inside his former Pearl District gallery. Although the jury set the verdict more than a year ago, an appeal wasn't possible until a final ruling in the case came earlier this month. A jury set the damages after a December 2006 trial in Multnomah County Circuit Court in which Kathleen Toynbee, owner of the former Portland Palate, accused Yoshida of wrongfully forcing her out and setting up his own eatery in her place. The jury's verdict included smaller amounts for conversion, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress, along with $2.25 million in punitive damages. The court has not yet decided whether Yoshida will have to pay about $600,000 for Toynbee's attorneys fees, said her lawyer Mick Seidl." Read the full story here...

Statistics on Kids in the River District

by nancy
As part of our advocacy for families that live, work, learn and play in central Portland, we've been searching for factual as well as anecdotal information. Zimmerman Community Center just sent a document that contains useful facts and figures about the River District gleaned from research that they commissioned. Here it is, for those of you who are curious.

A recent study by Portland State University estimates that over 250 children currently live in the River District. Zimmerman Community Center’s survey of River District residential buildings suggests this figure may be an undercount.

ZCC’s survey of River District residential buildings identified at least 30 apartment and condo buildings in the area where children are verified to live.

The number of children residing in the River District is increasing:
o The number of River District Children enrolled in Portland Public Schools has increased by at least 20% a year over the past few years.

Hip brewpub fills space of defunct autobody shop

by shooter
I met Kevin from Deschutes the other night at the PDBA meeting. The construction is progressing nicely with an anticipated May 2nd opening date. The brewmaster is scheduled to start brewing on site soon so that they have beer brewed on site for the grand opening.

MMMMMMM, Beeeeeeeeeer. Mirror Pond Ale, Black Butte Porter, Obsidian Stout. AAAAHHHHH!

From the Portland Business Journal :
The Pearl District has an unusually retro addition -- a grain silo. Installed a few weeks ago atop the former Jim Stevens Armory Autoworks, the grain silo will serve an entirely modern purpose: grain storage for the Portland edition of the Deschutes Brewery & Public House, which is expected to open in the former car repair shop in early May. The new brewpub is under construction at Northwest Davis Street and 11th Avenue, one block north of the Gerding Theater. The Jim Stevens autobody business closed about a year ago when an affiliate of Gerding Ed
