The daily news is pretty bleak these days, but yesterday we found four Portland-related articles that gave our spirits a lift: There are two new restaurants—one in Sellwood-Moreland and the other in NW District —whose value-priced menus are getting good reviews. Beaumont Middle School offers a unique mentorship program that pairs community members with struggling students—with fantastic results! The "crown jewel" of the Portland skateboard park system is planned for Old Town Chinatown. Yesterday, the City issued a request for proposal for a skateboard park builder and designer. The Community Cycling Center is launching a new project in 2009 to reach underserved communities in North and Northeast Portland. Our intent was to have these bookmarks up this morning, but technology threw us a curveball. Funny, funny. Tutors, Mentors Needed

The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth. One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting. We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center. Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. 2008 Spirit of Portland Award winners announced

A group of 21 Portland individuals/organizations who have helped make our city shine have been named recipients of the Spirit of Portland Awards this year. In addition, nine others were chosen by Mayor Tom Potter to win the Mayor's Awards. All 30 winners will be recognized during an award ceremony Dec.11 at City Hall.

Cully-Concordia Community Assessment and Action Plan To Go Before City Council on Nov. 20th

Under-Served Part of Portland to Get Attention and Resources The Cully-Concordia neighborhood has long been deprived of basic services like sidewalks, parks and community centers. Through the Schools, Families, Housing program, the area was targeted for improvement, and the Bureau of Planning was enlisted to do an assessment. Planning staff along with engaged community partners will present the Cully-Concordia Community Assessment and Action Plan to City Council for their adoption on November 20 at 2 p.m. The project's intent has been to improve the lives of children and their families while benefiting the whole Cully-Concordia community. Three public schools (Faubion, Rigler and Scott) and one school site near 42nd Ave./Killingsworth St were considered. There were some interesting tidbits in today's news: a backyard favorite is listed as a harmful invader—don't be fooled by the butterflies and sweet fragrance, this plant is a killer. USPS is raising its shipping rates. This year, it really pays to ship things during, not after, the holidays. Metropolis Cycle Shop and Pedal Bike Tours share a new North Portland space.
