(April 30, 2009) - The largest volunteer event in Oregon's 150-year history, Take Care of Oregon Days, will take place throughout the month of May 2009 as part of the state's sesquicentennial celebration. An anticipated 20,000 volunteers will work on more than 500 projects across the state to clean up and give back to Oregon as part of the state's 150th birthday. City Snaps » Time Based Arts Festival (TBA)
by shooter
When PICA announced the TBA:09 lineup , I started thinking about all the great photography from TBA. Each year, PICA assembles a talented group of photographers, writers, and videographers to help document TBA. This dedicated group freely gives their time and talent to PICA and to the artists who participate in TBA. Each participating artist receives photos of their performance or work. This is important, because many artists can't afford professional photography and the images from PICA give them quality images for promotion and the press. I've been fortunate to be a part of the press corps for the last three years. It's a blast, and you get to see more of the festival than most people. TBA:09 starts September 3, I can hardly wait! Here are a few of my favorites from TBA:08. Be sure to follow the link to the PICA flickr gallery to see more!

Hollywood Boosters Host Portland’s Largest Simon Says Contest
by pearlgirl
Simon says, "Raise your hand for Hollywood" You won't find nasty Simon Cowell, but you could spot a future American Idol among the crowd of kids competing in Portland's largest Simon Says contest Saturday, September 13. The contest will be held in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot, 4233 N.E. Sandy Boulevard, and is one of many events planned throughout the afternoon at the Hollywood Boosters' Bun Fest 2008. "We know of no other organized Simon Says contest that's taken place in Portland, so this is guaranteed to be the largest," said John Perkins, Perkins Architectural and Hollywood Booster organizer. "We're inviting children of all ages be a part of this first-ever event. Everyone will win a prize just for participating." Local singer-entertainer extraordinaire Tony Starlight, of the Tony Starlight Supperclub & Lounge in the Hollywood District, will emcee the event. Bun Fest 2008 officially kicks off the Hollywood Booster's second annual

Fireworks show downtown
by shooter
I wish I had gotten these photos up over the weekend, but this weekend was incredibly busy. Friday evening I went out to the eastside esplanade and joined a large, but very relaxed, crowd of people to watch the fireworks. The show itself was great with two barges used to launch the fireworks. I was seated closer to one barge, so I focused on it. Being on the eastside, with the prevailing breeze, I had to contend with the smoke. That didn't really detract from the show, but some of my images look like illuminated clouds rather than spectacular fireworks. If you haven't viewed the show from the eastside you should give it a try. It's easy access, the skyline is a nice backdrop, and the people were great.
