Shop Talk – The Paper Station

I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). New plan to help Portland Office of Transportation

Sam Adams may have shelved the idea of Safe, Sound and Green Streets, but at least he's recommending a way to deal with the Transportation Office budget shortfall. His idea is to dedicate the $4 million a year in unanticipated Utility License Fee revenue increase to the Portland Office of Transportation. While it will not address the backlog of basic service maintenance that is needed, it will prevent the Transportation Office from further cutting services.

This weekend, I got a really sweet email from a neighbor in Kenton: she was concerned that we missed some really great events in her neighborhood! In a word: yes, we missed posting them—but not intentionally! (They're posted now, check 'em out here ) Portland has a very active neighborhood system and our goal is to offer news, events and commentary for all 95 Portland neighborhoods. Portland School Board takes steps to finance facilities and IT upgrades

The volunteer Portland School Board approved a resolution Monday that enables Portland Public Schools to move forward with the repair of its aging and deteriorating facilities and the needed upgrade of computers and software. The board authorized the district to reimburse up to $50 million in costs it might incur between now and the completion of subsequent debt financing. The board has voiced its intent to seek a capital bond to fund needed repairs, renovation or rebuilding of Portland Public Schools' 90-plus schools and other facilities, and better support the educational and technological needs of students. Portland Public School buildings are 67 years old, on average. Nationally, school buildings are an average age of 45 years old. Director David Wynde, the board's point person on the facilities work, said: "This decision gives us the ability to start tackling some of the needed improvements now. Stumptown Challenge Winners

Portland's first urban adventure challenge— the Stumptown Challenge —took place on Saturday. Neighborhood Notes was one of the event sponsors and we hosted a drawing for four $50 gift cards to Kenny and Zuke's deli. The winners: 1. Eamon Driscoll 2. Michael Vitti 3. Tracy McFarlane 4. Portland Plan DRAFT Work Program Available

On June 8th the Planning Commission approved the Draft Preliminary Work Program for the Portland Plan. This document contains state-required Periodic Review tasks and reflects the community input received at the May and June meetings and at the public hearings held by the Planning Commission. Council will hold its first public hearing on the Draft Preliminary Work Program on Wednesday, August 6th. The meeting begins at 2 pm at City Hall, located at 1221 SW 4th Avenue. Kidical Mass - Second Ride

Last night was the second Kidical Mass ride in Portland. Decorated bikes, a primer on rules of the road, and lots of kids excited to ride safely in the street. KPTV was there, and here's a link to a video and article on their website. This was my son's first time riding his own bike on the road while I biked next to him. I couldn't have asked for a safer way for him to get some time on the road. The ride leaders are excellent, the group stays together, and all the parents and kids are watching out for each other. This is a fabulous way to role model good riding skills, and have kids and adults learning together. Kidical Mass is now a regular event, taking place on the third Friday of every month.
