From the Editor...

Since 2004, Lynne Duddy and Lawrence Howard haven't just been telling stories, they've been, in the words of Duddy, "helping people cultivate their own stories, allowing their own themes to emerge." If you've ever wanted to tell a story, enroll in one of their workshops and they'll help you write, tell and perform your story the way you want to. In addition to the Urban Teller series and holiday performances (Halloween, Valentine's Day), the Portland Story Theater is also home to the Solo Performance Festival, the only long-form personal narrative festival in the world.

Transformative experience! Sorry for using the overused phrase to describe the story-telling workshops and my performance, but - after completing the process and journey - no meeker phrase will do. Practical: L&L helped me distill my narrative into the pithy performance it was. Personal: my fellow storytellers were comrades and cheerleaders all the way. Powerful: the experience marked the beginning of a new stage of self-recognition and confidence in my life. Wise sages and shaman wrapped up in one, or rather two - that's what L&L can be for you, future travelers...

I've been to my second performance of Urban Tellers now and can't wait to come back for more! Each story truly brings you into the world of the storyteller. And what an amazing, creative community. Thank you!

I am still reveling from our group performance in early June. Lawrence and Lynne did a wonderful job of creating a show out of 6 independent storytellers and stories. As I reflect, I think I most enjoyed the process, the weekly progression for each storyteller. Or was it the final performance, when everything magically weaved together, I liked? Both! Thanks L&L

The Workshop put on by Lynne & Lawrence, and working with Portland Story Theater, was a life-changing experience for me. Lynne & Lawrence did such an amazing job of helping me distill all the thoughts and ideas I had for my story into a cohesive work of art. I met some amazing people, and had more fun than I've had in a long time. I can't wait to do another workshop. In return...they've found a new fan!

What could be more important and powerful than building community through storytelling? Portland Story Theater accomplishes this and more. A cornerstone of the West Coast storytelling experience, Portland Story Theater has opened my life to a whole new world of possibilities through authentic connection, expression, and play. Visionary, insightful, and healing, Portland Story Theater brings quality entertainment to the Northwest. Please do yourself and your community a huge favor by checking out the next show. You will be amazed and grateful that you did.

I have been to many of their shows and I have always left feeling satisfied. The storytellers are always fresh and insightful, they have made me laugh until it hurt and cry tears of both sadness and joy! I am glad I found Portland Story Theater and I will be attending their shows for years to come.

Portland Story Theater does more than expose you to the age-old tradition of story telling. It takes you places you'd never dreamed you would go - into the world of fellow travelers who have gone through the most interesting experiences.

The stories are all unique, just like their tellers.
They are poignant, funny, sad, insightful, and at times all of these at once.

I, for one, never leave without a deep sense of enrichment and gratitude for the brave individuals who get up on stage in front of God and everyone to bare their souls.

I am grateful to PST for the ongoing entertainment, fostering of great talent, and feeling of connection with this wonderful community!

This place is like The Moth...great personal stories with really talented tellers. If you live in Portland and enjoy going out for a show, this is a great way to do it.

I've been through the PST Urban Teller class twice. Lawrence & Lynn are incredibly kind and loving individuals who are excellent story tellers in their own right.

They create a safe place for people to explore and learn the art of storytelling, and the progress that most of the participants make in crafting their stories is impressive.

I would recommend PST shows to anyone who enjoys hearing real stories with strong emotional themes.

I’ve been through the PST Urban Tellers workshop program twice. Lynne and Lawrence do an excellent job creating a safe, fun, supportive environment where you can formulate and refine your story. We all have stories. Portland Story Theater workshops help people discover what works and what doesn’t. It’s satisfying to tell your story publicly, and have people come up and say they connected and were touched by something you shared.

Brad Clark made is professional storytelling debut at this year's SINGLEHANDEDLY! With his experience performing, and open-hearted approach to the work, he was a quick study.
