From the Editor...

Since 2004, Lynne Duddy and Lawrence Howard haven't just been telling stories, they've been, in the words of Duddy, "helping people cultivate their own stories, allowing their own themes to emerge." If you've ever wanted to tell a story, enroll in one of their workshops and they'll help you write, tell and perform your story the way you want to. In addition to the Urban Teller series and holiday performances (Halloween, Valentine's Day), the Portland Story Theater is also home to the Solo Performance Festival, the only long-form personal narrative festival in the world.

I overheard someone talking about Portland Story Theater, and I knew I had to check it out. I've been to two shows and they were both quite good. Every teller spoke from the heart; every story was compelling; and every seat in the house was taken. This is an incredibly rich experience. And it's affordable!

In addition to providing unique and intimate entertainment with their monthly Urban Teller performances, Portland Story Theater's workshops offer a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to improve their writing, speaking, and story telling skills. I loved the class. I love the performances. You will too.

Portland Story Theater is my favorite and the number one entertainment experience in the Portland-Vancouver area. I have attended their storytelling festivals for several years, bringing friends and family with me each time, and we always have a wonderful time. Each festival is a unique and exciting experience, that never fails to charm and delight the audience. The hosts and creators, Lynne and Lawrence, have given us a real gift - whether you call it theater, art or just plain fun!

I took part in the Urban Tellers workshop that had its public performance on June 8, 2012. I found the entire experience interesting and gratifying. Lynne and Lawrence are very good at what they do. They coach gently and guide each teller to find the essence of his or her story, and to present it persuasively.

Think about it, don't YOU have a story that you need to tell? Get into a Portland Story Theater workshop!

I finished my second Urban Tellers workshop with a performance night in April. What a gift this has been to me! Portland Story Theater provided a nurturing environment within which my group was able to dig deep and deliver a meaningful personal narrative. I am grateful for their help in developing a new, satisfying way for me to express myself.

What a transformative experience the Urban Tellers workshop and performance was for me... To be able to focus my creative energies on my own story and to steep in the broth of my fellow tellers' work was a precious gift. Under the gentle leadership of Lynne and Lawrence, I spent those four weeks in a space that was both healing and instructive. And I grew because of it. Thank you, Lynne, Lawrence and all my fellow tellers! And thank you to the generous and responsive audience of Portland Story Theater. I recommend the experience to anyone who needs a little story in their life. Don't think about it -- just do it!

Everyone has a story, and Lynne and Lawrence are tremendously effective at helping ANYONE bring that story out into the world. Every month their workshops and subsequent performances showcase personal narrative at its best. Even if you think you can't tell a story or even speak in public, their workshops will make it possible. I recommend them to everyone.

In city full of storytellers and theater of all kinds, Portland Story Theater's productions stand out as one of the most intimate and authentic story telling events in the region.
Hats off to Lawrence and Lynne for all that you do! My experience as an Urban Teller was transformational.

I have been a fan of Portland Story Telling Theater for years and just finished taking the Urban Tellers workshop. How can I explain all the emotions that I experienced in those four short weeks of developing and performing my story? What mattered most was the ultimate high of last Friday night's performance with my fellow story tellers. I strongly encourage anyone who is remotely iterested to take this step into an adventure of a life time!

The Urban Tellers show in December at Hipbone Studio was the fourth time I have taken a workshop with Lynne and Lawrence. Each time I learn new things and my storytelling evolves. The performances are always amazing, fun, intimate and enlightening. Come as an audience member or come as a workshop participant, either way you will be delighted!
