Making the Case for Blinds

by pearlgirl
We've heard rumblings about a certain "peep show" at the Wyatt Apartments. At first, when the building was converted from condos to apartments, there were no blinds in the windows. This caused more than a little visual distress, as you can imagine.

The Wyatt purchased the blinds, but now we're hearing that some tenants just don't see the necessity of using them. I think this photo demonstrates a really good reason, don't you? (as you can imagine, the view gets much, much worse.)

Every time a new building goes up, we have a period of "bad nekked" (thank you, Seinfeld) that ensues as neighbors adjust to life in an urban environment. I call it the ugly side of density.

So please, it's time to adjust. Use your blinds or wear a robe.

You would have to ask the residents who live across from the apartment if they paid extra, but somehow I doubt it since they were living there prior to The Wyatt being built.

Did you have to pay extra for your place to get that view?

PS. The Wyatt is suffering. They're offering $2000 in moving expenses to new residents to try and fill that albatross.

Jon,

Several residents have approached the Wyatt management team about this matter over the past month or so with no results. Both the Wyatt staff and the residents who are affected by the issue are frustrated and tired of dealing with it.

thanks for your comment.

This is the pettiest complaint I've ever read.

What a poser.

You should be *grateful* that THIS, this diabolical awful terrible projectile-vomiting problem, is your problem. I am simply amazed that someone would bitch about this, this most vapid of problems.

Get a life. And - hey, if you're proposing mandatory blinds, why aren't you using yours???

You're right. This is a livability issue. It's not related to affordable housing at all. The Wyatt is, in fact, a luxury apartment building.

The affordable housing and residents here in the neighborhood do not deserve to be referenced this way.

Thanks for your comment.

wow - didn't realize only people in low income housing could be messy. do my neighbors really think this way?
Jon - May 13, 2008 09:39 PM
Seems like a simple fix: talk to the building management. They are already having issues renting the places, so I am sure making the building look more appealing from the sidewalk would be in their best interest.

We don't live here because we want a better education in the anatomy or sexual habits of our neighbors. I think that people need to adjust their suburban habits and respect others not only visually (window covers/clothing) but also acoustically (thank you to my neighbors at 3:45 am). I rent in Kearney Plaza so I'm sure the sound issue between units isn't a problem in other buildings like it is here. But my god... get a new mattress that doesn't squeak and put a sock in it at 3am!

I didn't know they turned the Wyatt into low income housing...

i tend to hope my neighbors are straight men, due to my possession of breasts and my fondness for natural light through the waist-level windows that could reveal them to their never-noticeably-occupied attic. but these open windows show the whole bed! yuck!

i don't understand the "look away" people. you can't un-see whatever happens in that bedroom if you happen to, you know, look out your window at the wrong moment.
moreno1 - May 12, 2008 02:28 PM
but seriously folks, here's the thing:

why can't the "sock-only" people be matched up with those open minded folk who are clearly comfortable with a daily moon shot or two from their esteemed neighbors across the street?

then those of us, who've made this "our life problem" can be matched with each other.

and by the way, my angry friend, let's not use naughty language just because someone took a picture of your place (allowing us all the chance to appreciate your inner decorator's skills)
moreno1 - May 12, 2008 02:02 PM
anonymous! you are entirely too angry. are your shades closed? did someone see something you didn't like?
shooter - May 12, 2008 01:57 PM
I believe that this is a simple case of common courtesy among neighbors. How it blew up into a "its their right" fight is beyond me. If you live an a condo building you understand that more often than not your "view" is into the building next door. If you want to let in some sunlight and not feel like you live in a dungeon you will see into the unit across the way.

The intent of the post was to ask for simple courtesy among neighbors.

Apparently for some of you common courtesy extends as far as a raised middle finger. That's very neighborly of you.
Pearlgirl - May 12, 2008 01:37 PM
I believe that 'scantily clad' in this case is wearing green socks and nothing else. Not to mention, directly in view of a neighboring building. There's no need to gawk, just look out your window and there she blows...

It's really not as simple as 'mind your own business' when someone else's business is framed by your only window.
AceTracer - May 12, 2008 12:59 PM
It's really not up to you whether they close their blinds or not, and anyone that is offended by it can look away.

I don't see this as a problem for living in a dense area, such things are commonplace in Europe and Latin America where for hundreds of years people have lived with their windows open and walked around scantily clad.

Mind your own business and others will mind theirs.
Pearlgirl - May 12, 2008 12:21 PM
Actually, this is someone else's problem. I'm simply posting what has become a livability issue for a group of residents in a neighboring building.
Anonymous - May 12, 2008 12:11 PM
Uh, this is your life's problem?
Pearlgirl - May 12, 2008 11:19 AM
Pretty lippy there, anonymous...
Anonymous - May 12, 2008 11:12 AM
Boo hoo! Fuck off.
Pearlgirl - May 12, 2008 10:49 AM
If only it were that easy. It's hard to avert your eyes from what is directly in your line of sight, a.k.a. the view from your condo.

Don't want the peep show? Don't peep.
