"Celebrity businessman Junki Yoshida says he'll appeal a more than $2.5 million jury verdict intended to punish him for his conduct toward the owner of a wine bar inside his former Pearl District gallery.
Although the jury set the verdict more than a year ago, an appeal wasn't possible until a final ruling in the case came earlier this month.
A jury set the damages after a December 2006 trial in Multnomah County Circuit Court in which Kathleen Toynbee, owner of the former Portland Palate, accused Yoshida of wrongfully forcing her out and setting up his own eatery in her place.
The jury's verdict included smaller amounts for conversion, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress, along with $2.25 million in punitive damages. The court has not yet decided whether Yoshida will have to pay about $600,000 for Toynbee's attorneys fees, said her lawyer Mick Seidl."
