Starbucks to offer limited free WiFi service

by shooter
What an innovative idea for Starbucks, free WiFi. Oh, but wait, it's LIMITED to 2 hours only and you have to have a Starbucks card. At least Pearl residents can go to great local coffee shops like World Cup, Urban Grind, and Sip & Kranz and get unlimited free WiFi access. Not to mention better tasting coffee. I don't hate Starbucks or think they are evil, but rather the alternatives are much more appealing.

From the Portland Business Journal:

"Starbucks Corp. said it will offer limited free WiFi service at its stores beginning this spring.

Under the Seattle coffee giant's (NASDAQ: SBUX) plan, customers with a Starbucks card can use up to two hours of free WiFi service per day. AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) broadband customers will have unlimited free WiFi access.

After two hours, non-AT&T customers can purchase additional WiFi access for $3.99 for an additional two hours, or monthly memberships will cost $19.99.

Starbucks said it will phase in its new WiFi plan "on a market-by-market basis with store implementation beginning this spring and completed by the end of the year.""

McMenamins has free wifi too.

I've used Starbucks for wifi access twice in the last several years. Once in Provo and once in some other obscure place, both while traveling. HOw do they get away with charging - I see people in there all the time on their laptops
