If these walls could talk, they would quarrel

by shooter
Here is an interesting piece from The Oregonian about condo life and homeowners associations. If you have never served on an HOA board, don't take this article as rationale to not serve. Rather, understand what your board members do on your behalf, the sometimes difficult choices they face, and realize they do this voluntarily. Personally, if you own a condominium, I believe you have a responsibility as a co-owner of the building to serve on the board. If you choose not to, at least give board members the respect they deserve for giving their time.

From The Oregonian:

The peacocks invaded Scott Dietterick's Forest Heights neighborhood in 2004.

Apparently attracted by pet food, the three big birds scratched cars, got into garages and threatened to charge at people, all the while emitting their loud, screeching call.

As president of the Brownstone Homes Condominium Association, it fell to Dietterick and his fellow board members to figure out what to do. But their plan to trap the peacocks drew fierce resistance from a small pocket of Brownstone residents, who thought the idea was cruel.

"We called them the PLA, the peacock liberation army," Dietterick said. "We got nasty e-mails. At one point, someone removed the door to our trap. There is no way one of the birds did that."

Many Oregonians love their new condos and townhomes. But as thousands of people in the state move into closer quarters, some are learning that the vaunted "carefree" living promised by developers can be an illusion.

Scott Dietterick's made several false statements regarding the peacocks in Forest Heights. I have lived in Forest Heights for several years and I wish the reporter for the Oregonian would've cited at least one other resident for this article.

I am sure that his false statements made for an interesting read, but the birds were killed by a member of the homeowner’s association with a shotgun. This was announced at one of the homeowner’s association meetings. Not only is it illegal to do this within city limits, the shotgun was discharged near a grade school. One of my neighbors called the police and reported this stunt.

The homeowner’s association also placed several large traps around the neighborhood. These traps were large enough for a small child to get into and placing them near a grade school was very irresponsible. When I wrote the homeowner’s association and expressed my concern, I was threatened with “criminal prosecution.” I never touched the traps or indicated that I would damage them. I then forwarded the e-mail to the police.

The birds never scratched my vehicle or my neighbor’s vehicles. This was used as an excuse to justify killing them. They were only noisy 1 night in 2 years and that was during mating season.

If you don’t like the wildlife, Mr. Dietterick, I suggest you move out of FOREST Heights!
